Ferrandis Gives Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team Back-To-Back Wins with Overall at Unadilla

Dylan Ferrandis put his Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team on top for the second consecutive round, winning the overall at Unadilla in New Berlin, New York. The 10th round of the Pro Motocross series also saw home state boy Justin Cooper secure fourth overall (4-4), while Colt Nichols was just behind him in fifth (5-6). Rounding out the top 10 was rookie Ty Masterpool (10-11). Although Mitchell Oldenburg had a great opening moto, trouble in moto two pushed him to score 16th overall (9-37).

It was another fierce battle for the win and Ferrandis once again proved that he is capable of running at the front. The opening moto had him fall in line in third after a good start and stayed within striking distance of the leader after inheriting second. In the end, a second was what he had, so he focused on moto two. This time his start was even better and he found himself in the lead by the end of the first lap. Ferrandis held off constant pressure to finish with his third win of the season.

The day started out on a high note for Cooper who grabbed the moto one holeshot. He maintained the lead for four laps before going down in the rollers. Cooper remounted and still managed to finish fourth. In the second moto, he once again put his Yamaha YZ250F at the front of the pack but relinquished the lead to his teammate. After some great battling, Cooper crossed the finish line in fourth. His 4-4 moto score put him fourth overall.

Continuing his consistency, Nichols was once again in the mix of the racing this weekend at Unadilla. After a tough start in moto one where he came around the first lap in 16th, he managed to pick off riders and put in a fifth-place ride. Moto two saw him get a much better start in sixth and he maintained the position throughout the race. His 5-6 moto scores gave him fifth overall.

The young gun Masterpool kept a positive attitude as he started off the day in moto one with a 19th place start. He had his work cut out for him and managed to get back up to 11th by the time the checkered flag flew. The second moto was better in terms of starts where he was 11th around the first lap, but a few mistakes midway during the race pushed him back to 12th where he finished. His 11-12 helped round out another top 10 for the rookie.

As the day started, Oldenburg entered the first moto with confidence after having a great qualifying session. His good start in moto one afforded him the chance to put himself in the top 10. Oldenburg didn’t hold back and pulled off a ninth in the opening moto. When Oldenburg lined up for moto two, a technical issue prevented him from starting and he took off late, forcing him to end the second moto in 37th.

“Today was a great day. Dylan rode superb and did what he needed to do to get his second overall in a row. We will keep fighting onto Budds Creek.”

Dylan Ferrandis

“The track was really rough today! The ruts were very deep. I was not really comfortable during the morning practices, but then we changed some things on my bike to improve it and it was way better. I had a good battle with AC [Adam Cianciarulo] once again. I’m very pumped about my day and my riding in moto two.”

Justin Cooper
Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team

“It was a good day at Unadilla. We put in solid motos and the bike was good. I ended up crashing out of the lead in the first one and rode tight after that. The second moto I lacked a little pace, but I have my eyes on next weekend already. The small change for moto two end ended up being better. The team did a great job working with us on a really tough track today.”

Colt Nichols
Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team

“The bike was awesome. I just needed to make a few little adjustments before second moto, but live and learn. I felt my riding was really good today, but my starts were horrible so I didn’t help myself at all. We have just a few races left to turn those around.”

Ty Masterpool
Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team

“The bike was really good today! In the first moto I didn’t get a good start and had to work my way up. I had another bad start in moto two and worked my way up to ninth then made some mistakes and ended up 10th overall.”

Mitchell Oldenburg
Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team

“I’m really bummed with the way the day ended. I had a really good day going, qualifying fifth overall. In the first moto, I finished ninth, which was my best finish of the season so far. Unfortunately I had a mechanical in the second moto and my bike wouldn’t start on the line. I took off late and just couldn’t do it with the bike. We’ll regroup, get a good week of riding and training in, then come back for these last two rounds and give it everything we’ve got.”
